Humour and Horror. Bonus.

The Key to the Demon’s Gate, Daniel M. Quilter

Not only rammed full of action, but hilarious. This book may seem like a juvenile title, and you could stumble across it in the young adult section of your digital bookstore, but I’m a thirty-year-old man and I loved it.
A few teenagers end up in a fictional world with pirates, wizardry and swordplay, but they somehow manage to have a damn good time. Whether our heroes are cross dressing to settle the conflicts of a marital dispute or trying to claim new nicknames by drowning their enemies, this narrative is constantly entertaining. Whether you want giggles, tears or tensions, this book is for you.

Highlights!

Humor: we’ve already covered this; it’s a funny book.

Playful: The entire story flows in waves of mischief.

Compartmental: The novel is expertly divided to follow the few protagonists as their divided, giving the reader a little extra variety.

Girls VS. Boys... and the Result is Aready Decided

The EXXtinction: The only hope for mankind is a woman. J.A. Antonio

Some very clear allegory and a few slaps of social commentary. This novel literally forces a war between men and women, and the result is AWESOME. Although this premise could be construed as politically incorrect, the truth is that the conflict works well. The themes and issues around the sex-based savagery are balanced (mostly) and fair (predominantly). However, when you read it, try to put the political stuff to the back of your mind, and enjoy the fun fighting; there’s a lot of it and it’s well written. J.A. Antonio has also focused on the positive aspects of the story, such as the inspirational father-daughter bond, and this ensures the tone of the book remains gratifying.

Highlights!

Premise: Girls vs. boys, it’s as old as good vs. evil with equally dramatic consequences.

Characters: A wonderful cast that will have you wondering why they’re fighting, even though it’s fiction.

Time: The story is set in the future, but it still feels extremely current.

Double the Devil!

Double Feature!
The Devils lieutenant and Escape from Hell, Shervin Jamali.

Both of these novellas are wonderfully miserable with lovely moments of beautiful violence. Sound conflicting? Well, it’s wonderful to dive into Michael’s world as he miserably remembers his lost family. To get them back, these stories tell the beautiful (and fairly gory) tales of his violent reparations.
Join Michael as he battles to appease his conscience, and please the devil.
The Devil's Lieutenant, as the first novella in this series, is predominantly concerned with establishing the birth of the narrative. Who is Michael and why has Satan chosen him? It’s brutal, clever, and entirely fierce.
Escape from Hell builds our hero into a more complete, cunning, and capable warrior. How can he defeat the lord of the underworld? It’s intriguing, suspenseful, and of course, bloody as a bare foot on broken glass.
As these are novellas, I recommend reading them both back to back. If you enjoy one, you’ll love the other, and it’s more fun to consume double the devil.

Highlights!

Gore: Although this isn’t for everyone, if you enjoy a little extra descriptiong with your gunfights, these are the books for you.

Development: The second title here is impressively original, with eclectic characters and a progressive story line.

Pace: This tale moves FAST!
